Dehradun is the capital city of the state of Uttrakhand located in Doon Velly 230 kilometers north of India's capital New Delhi covered area of 37.17 km. Dehradun located at an attitude of 695 meters with population of 270, 159. Dehra is a camp and Doon stands for a term used for a river valley between a smaller areas and the main Himalayas, and the present town of Dehradun was founded in the early eighteenth century by 'Guru Ram Rai', the elder son of seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai, who came here in 1675, and first settled village is Dhamawala which is now famous for annual 'Jhanda Fair' on the fifth day after Holi. Thus the name originate from Dera or settlement in the valley and marking this settlement is a Gurudwara called 'Guru Ram Rai Darbar', built in 1699 and modelled on the tomb of Mughal Emperor Jehangir.
Geography : The district is surrounded by the Himalayas in the north, Shivalik Hills in the south, the river Ganga in the east, and the river Yamuna in the west. The water divide of Ganga and Yamuna passes through the city. Haridwar, Rishikesh, Roorkee, Mussoorie and Saharanpur are the neighboring cities of Dehradun.
Durbar Shri Guru Ram Rai:
This place is develoed by Sixth Guru Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji.This Sikh site is also related to the history of Dehradun. Guru Ram Singh pitched his tents in this place after being ordered out of the country by Aurangzeb, the mughul emperor.
Forest Research Institute:
one of the most famous institutes in Dehradun. The museum and the botanical garden are the chief attractions here.
Tapovan:
Is a very sacred place located in the vicinity of the Raipur/Sahastradhara crossing close to Ganga River. The air here is filled with a spirit of devotion and sanctity. It is surrounded by lush green vellies, which have a rejuvenating effect on the jaded nerves. It is believed that Guru Dronacharya underwent penitence here. Tapovan is a well known site for meditation and other spiritual purposes .
Doon School :
The Doon School is a premier institution in India, spread across 70 acres in Dehradun in the state of Uttrakhand. Doon school is founded by Satish Ranjan Das,was one of pre-Independence India's eminent barristers and a member of the Executive Council of the Viceroy of India in 1935.
Robber's Cave:
this place offers splendid view of the surrounding mountains. It is the big combination of natural cave formations and gentle streams . Robber’s cave is situated at 8 kms from city center, Guchu Pani. Here a stream of water goes underground and reappears after few metres.
Sahastradhara:
means a collection of thousand streams. Sahastradhara is situated at 14 kms from Dehradun, these are the sulphur springs and a 9 meter high waterfall. s one amongst these which is very popular among all the tourists visiting the city. It is the perfect place to see the beauty of nature. Sahastradhara is also called as the thousand fold spring.

By Air: The capital city of Dehradun has its own domestic airport named Jolly Grant Airport. Located at the outskirts of the city, the airport lies only 25kms away. Daily flight operates to and from Delhi, which is the nearest international airport. Delhi is connected by air to all the major Indian cities like: Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata etc.
