Altitude 1550 mts. To 1950 mts.
Climate Min. Temp. 40 C, Max. Temp. 300 C

Lying on the southern slopes of outer Himalayas, Tehri Garhwal is on of the sacred hilly districts of Uttarakhand State. Before the creation of universe, Lord Brahma is said to have meditated on this sacred land. Muni-ki-Reti and Tapovan of the district are the places of penance for the ancient Rishis. Its hilly terrain and lack of easy communications have helped it to preserve its culture almost intact. Tehri and Garhwal are the two words combined for naming the district as Tehri Garhwal. While the prefix Tehri is the corrupted form of the word `Trihari` which signifies a place that washes away all the three types of sins, namely sins born out of thought (Mansa), word (Vacha) and deed (Karmana), the other part `Garh` means country fort. In fact during olden days possession of number of forts was considered as a significant measuring rod of the prosperity and power of their rulers. Prior to 888, the whole of the Garhwal region was divided into small `garhs` ruled by separate independent kings known as Rana, Rai or Thakur. It is said that the prince Kanakpal who hailed from Malwa visited Badrinath ji (presently in Chamoli district) where he met the then mightiest king Bhanu Pratap. King Bhanu Pratap was impressed with the prince and got his only daughter married to him and also handed over his kingdom. Gradually Kanakpal and his descendents extended their empire by conquering all the garhs. Thus up to 1803 i.e. for 915 years the whole of the Garhwal region remained under their control.

Folk Dances of Uttarakhand

Folk Dances of Uttarakhand
According to Kumar Ghandhrva, Folk music is mother of Classical Music. It is very much true with the folk songs of this state also. The different rages are inbuilt with the different folk tunes of Garhwal, which include Pahari, Bhopali, Durga, Malkauns, Jog, Jogkauns, Bheempalasi Madmas, and many more.
The Folk lore of Uttarakhand, and indeed, the lives of the people are filled with dancing, it is as important for them as wearing cloths, a must for life. For them the Gods can be influenced by dances not to fail man. The art of dancing also owes its inspiration to the fascinating mythical dancing damsels who dwell on snow-clad peaks and are variously described as Ancheries, Kecharis or Paries.

Folk Music Of Uttarakhand

Music
The term Uttarakhand music is used to denote folk, religious and contemporary music from both kumaon and garhwal regions of Uttarakhand. The term Uttarakhand music is also used to denote the unique experience of the faithful who enjoy the traditional chalariya dance or hum to the latest musical numbers .
The hills of himalayas have inspired generations of singers and musicians throughout the ages. The natural beauty of the mountains that inspires a deep spirituality, and the values of life have resulted in Uttarakhandi music having a mix of lyrical texture and reprsentying the social, cultural ethos of the place. The traditional forms of Himalayan music have deeply popular. This has been especially true of the Pahari penchant for folksy values, biting humour, raw honesty, loving devotion, and soaring spirits that shines through each of the Uttarakhand songs. The Uttarakhand Himalayas have inspired generations of singers, balladeers, and musicians throughout the ages. Both the natural beauty of the mountains that inspires a deep spirituality, and the harshness of life that darkens the heart with adversity and anguish.Indeed, in face of other homogenizing trends in India, Uttarakhandi music has distinguished itself in retaining its cultural uniqueness and vibrant sound, while remaining popular among the masses.
If the music and dance styles of any region are profuse, it automatically emphasizes the rich cultural heritage. The culture of Uttarakhand is an illustrious example of this trend. Music is integrated to every nook of Uttarakand society. The aura of this mountainous region is such that it had inspired musicians to compose wonderful tunes. Mighty streams of rivers, lushness of the pine forests, rugged mountain peaks, celestial beauties of hill stations-all these became themes of numerous musicals composition. The folk music primarily is related to the various festivals, religious traditions, folk stories and simple life of the people of Uttarakhand. The music of Kumaon and garhwal region is a medley of fine tunes and lyrics. Content is spiritual and it depicts conundrum of the socio- cultural scenario of the state.

History of Uttarakhand

History of Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand an ancient Pauranic term for the central stretch of the Indian Himalayas especially the northern Himalaya. Its peaks and valleys were well known in ancient times as the abode of gods and goddesses and source of the Ganga River. Today, it is often called "the Land of the Gods" (Dev Bhoomi) because of the presence of a multitude of Hindu pilgrimage spots. The Pauravas, Kushanas, Kunindas, Guptas, Katyuris, Palas, the Chands, and Parmars or Panwars and the BritisH have ruled Uttarakhand in turns.
The region was originally settled by KOLS (a tribe) which were lately joined by KHAS (a tribe who were originally from Kashmir & Bhutan) by the Vedic period. It is believed that Sage Vyasa scripted the Mahabharata here as the Pandavas are believed to have traveled and camped in the region. The first major dynasties of Garhwal and Kumaon were the Kunindas in the 2nd century B.C. In the 4th Century Kunindas gave a way to NAGA dynasties. Between the 7th and 14th centuries the “Katyuri dynasties of KHAS origin dominated lands of varying extent from the Katyur valley in Kumaun (Vaijnath). Other peoples of the Tibeto-Burman group known as Kiratas are thought to have settled in the northern highlands as well as in pockets throughout the region, and believed to be the ancestors to the modern day Bhotiya, Raji, Buksha, and Tharu peoples.
